INTERVIEW WITH VOYAGE MARYLAND.

Hidden Gems: Meet GARY LEON of THE CO-OP PROJECT

Today we’d like to introduce you to GARY LEON.

GARY , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
“I started this journey with a single, driving reason: I know what it’s like to be overlooked. I’ve seen firsthand how a lack of opportunity can stall a dream, and how a single ‘yes’ can ignite one. I had to build this organization from the ground up, teaching myself every step of the way because I refused to let another generation wait as long as I did to learn the secrets of success.

Our philosophy is straightforward: Learn it late, teach it early. Whether it’s mastering money or building a business, we are bringing the ‘insider’ knowledge to the communities that need it most. We’re not just teaching skills; we’re giving young people the head start they deserve.” “Opportunity shouldn’t be a luxury. It should be a standard.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
“Has it been a smooth road? Not even close. But honestly, I’ve been dealing with obstacles my whole life, so I’m no stranger to the climb. If this work were easy, it would’ve been done already.

What surprised me the most, though, wasn’t the work itself it was the systems surrounding it. I went into this thinking everyone would want to help because we’re talking about the future of our kids. Who doesn’t want to see young people win? But I’ve learned the opposite is often true. I’ve come face-to-face with gatekeepers and poor leadership people in roles who withhold information or do the bare minimum just to protect the status quo.

It’s disheartening to see people settle for nonsense when our youth deserve the absolute maximum. But here’s the thing: a broken systems isn’t new to me. It just confirms why this non-profit is so necessary. At the end of the day, hurdles are meant to be jumped, and no gatekeeper is strong enough to stop a mission this important. We aren’t just trying to fit into the system we’re here to lead the way around it.”

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Co-Op Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, but we don’t move like a typical organization. Our mission is simple: we create real opportunities for Youth Empowerment and Education for the Youth.

We didn’t want to be “just another” non-profit, so we built our model on four pillars that set us apart:

We Listen First: We don’t guess what kids need. We actually listen to the youth and the leaders already on the ground in the community before we build anything.

Small Business Synergy: For every program we run, we align it with a small business. We believe in building a local ecosystem that supports everyone.

Project-First Funding: We don’t ask for money just to keep a big organization running. We fund specific projects so the impact is immediate and focused.

Total Transparency: Our donors never have to wonder where their money went. We show you exactly how your dollars are hitting the ground.

From the DMV area to international projects, we’ve already served over 5,000 kids and families through in-school, after-school, and online programs. We’ve seen what happens when You Think Outside The Box and we’re just getting started.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck isn’t an option for me. If I were lucky, I would’ve hit the lotto a long time ago.

I’m a Capricorn, so my entire life is built on three things: hard work, discipline, and sacrifice. I don’t wait for things to happen; I put the work in until they do. The only thing I’m ‘lucky’ for is having the mother I have. She’s the one who instilled everything I needed in me to survive. She gave me the foundation, and I used that to build the rest.

In this game, you don’t get what you wish for you get what you work for.”
